Why I chose these Lesson Plans
All three of these lesson plans mean something special to me. I enjoyed each and every one of them, most likely because of the hands-on and interactive nature of them. I believe the students enjoyed them as well.
I have always been attracted to and interested in the cardiac area of medicine. When I was a new nurse, I was placed on an extremely busy floor at NYU Medical Center. Our patients were post-op open heart and peripheral vascular surgical patients. They were all on heart monitors, so like it or not, I had to become very proficient in cardiac nursing. Fortunately, I loved it! I have always found myself working in this area, except for a few breaks into research, home care and ortho-neuro.
So, teaching the Cardiac unit is a favorite. I really like to see the students make the connection between the circulation of the blood through the heart by dissecting the sheep's heart. I know it is so important and helpful to have those impressions in your mind when learning about cardiac diseases and caring for those patients.
The Infection Control lesson is always fun because I get to let the students put on all the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). They love it, as it makes their career interest seem real to them. Through this lesson, they understand WHY they must protect themselves as they learn how an infection gets spread. This year was especially surreal as the students seemed familiar with the equipment from seeing all our frontline healthcare workers on tv in the news, sadly due to the pandemic. The students were certainly proficient in the mask and hand washing sections.
The lesson on the World of Work is a really great one because we wrap up our year with this. I always wished I had more guidance when leaving high school, someone to tell me, this is how you need to do your resume, that there is also a cover letter, and how to conduct myself on an interview. We cover all that and even have the students interview one another. That is the fun hands on part and they have a rubric to grade each other, lots of laughs and lessons!
